General Information on Icons
Icons are the visual miniature pictures that appear in your
WorkBench screen. In the CLI they appear as the files with a ".info"
extension. For example the file Disk.info on this disk is the
file for the "APDC # 018" icon that appears when you first insert
this disk into a disk drive.
To display various information on any icon, select (single click)
the icon and choose the Info command from the WorkBench menu in the
WorkBench screen.
There are several different types of icons. These are:
Tool This type of icon is used to start up any sort of
program. For example the icon for IconEd in the
System drawer of your WorkBench disk is a tool
icon. The tool icon simply starts up the program.
If you move the tool icon, it also moves the
associated program with the same name as the icon.
Project This type of icon is used to start up a program using
a default tool. For example, the icon for this file,
Icons.Doc.info, is a project icon. When you double
click on this icon this file that you are now reading,
Icons.Doc, is displayed with the program Less, which is
also on this disk. The icon is associated with this text
file, so if you move the icon you will move this file
along with it, but you will NOT move the program Less,
the default tool for the icon. If you move this or any
project icon to a place where it cannot access its
default tool the icon will not operate.
Drawer This type of icon is used for displaying directories in
your screen. If you move a drawer icon all the contents
of that directory are moved along with it.
Disk This type of icon is used for floppy or hard disks. This
type of icon is only visible in the root directory level
of a disk. The default tool of many disk icons is DiskCopy,
and this is why you can copy disks in the WorkBench simply
by moving one disk icon on top of another.
Garbage This type of icon is used for the trashcan.
With the utilities IconType on this disk you can change between these
icon types. See the file IconType.Doc for instructions on how to do
this. Please note that any image can be used for any of the above icon
types. So for example an icon that looks like a garbage can could
actually be a tool icon.
If you have an icon that you want to use with a program, you can do
this by simply copying the icon WITH the ".info" extension into the
name of your program. So for example if you wanted to use the Guitar
icon in the Icons drawer of this disk for some program named TEST that
you may have, simply execute in the CLI the command:
1>copy "APDC # 018:Icons/Guitar.info" TEST.info
Note that TEST.info includes the ".info" extension. If you just
typed TEST then the Guitar icon would be copied into the file for
your program TEST, and thus your program would be erased.
Note: The CLI prompt "1>" in this example is not meant to be typed.
